This is the first time we have made sauerkraut. A friend of ours gave him a taste of some they had made and he was hooked. My husband and a friend shredded the cabbage in an old slaw cutter that belonged to his grandmother. They used the directions in the Ball Blue Book of Preserving and used a few pointers from our friend. After 6 weeks they tasted it and it tasted good and they made plans to get together to can and process the jars. Well canning day came and his friend had the flu so I helped him with the process. While we were canning my husband kept saying “this is the best sauerkraut he has ever tasted”, so I decided to try some. After trying a small taste I decided that I still don’t like sauerkraut.
Sauerkraut has always been a part of our New Years Day celebrations. So it will be more interesting to have our own homemade kraut. Of course I won’t be eating any but his family enjoys it.
